Language is power: Why Barack Obama may be our next President

I just watched this speech. Of course, I agree with your post.

...he gives a speech that hurts no one, acts apologetically for everyone, and leaves the black and the white, the republican and the democrat, the man and the woman feeling equally reassured and hopeful.

There is no other candidate that has shown he or she can do this. This is indeed Barack's special gift and just the thing to point our country in the direction it needs to be.

I was concerned at first that his youth and lack of political experience would render him as Gore was the *first* time Gore ran for the presidency-- young, and a little raw.

But I too have been impressed with his eloquence and his very articulate speaking. He is poised, and he has run a very positive campaign-- although I am a bit dismayed that he is being dragged into negative political fighting-- I sincerely hope that he can avoid mudslinging tactics.

As an Independent, I am carefully considering voting for the man. I think that it is time that the pendulum swung back, although I wish our two-party system would slowly die. The Dems are incredibly fractured, and just by dint that he is black and Hillary is a woman. Politics remain incredibly polarized.

I admire the fact that he not only realizes this, but speaks openly that he understands it will take time, and more presidential adminstrations to come.
that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America

I hate that so, so much. The world condemns us without knowing US.
I am not very upfront about my political views and feelings as I am educating myself in the ways of the polticial world but I have to say this man scares me. He does speak very pretty and I know he says what a majority of American's want to hear but I am just not convinced he is the man for the job. I have long voted for Democrats but within the past five years have been very disheartened by the candidates we have on both sides of the fence. Personally, I cannot vote for Obama or Hillary right now.
What I've been saying to those who question his experience level and if he's ready to take on the job:

What exactly was it about being Governor of ARKANSAS for 8 years that made Bill Clinton ready for the job? NOTHING. And he was one hell of a President.

It IS an amazing speech. I read the transcript today at my desk. Obama tends to make me emotional when I least expect it. "I'm here because of Ashley" made me lose my shit. Instant tears. If I were alone I would've let it out but...you know...working.
I took the time to watch the speech on Youtube. Already it's getting critical acclaim, the guy can speak and inspire, I'll certainly give him that. The more I learn about this guy the more I find that he's better than I originally considered. I still worry that he's not interested in making America a land of the free as he might claim, but at least he's paying the concepts of civil liberty and government accountability lip service, which is more than McCain and Clinton are doing right now.

I also find it rather amusing that Clinton claims that the media is "soft" on Obama, but every single controversy they've tried to level at him seems to make him stronger, and every time the press levels their cameras at him he seems to make them all look like amateurs. He doesn't behave like a Democrat should, when he's attacked, he blocks and then counter attacks, whereas typically Dem's simply try to redirect or point the finger in a different direction. The other two are going to have a very hard time beating him.

well said, well done, posting the full text.

I am a Democrat, but if Obama is elected, I am leaving. I am going to Mexico and make a better life before the 12,000,000 illegals realize they made a mistake.

I've been for Sen. Obama since I heard his speech at the Dem convention in 2004. How many of you saw it? At that time I said to myself, 'He should run for President.' I absolutely will not vote for Hillary Clinton if the super-delegates take away the vote of the majority of the people and give her the nomination. I won't vote Republican either. I'll just stay home. That's difficult for me to say, because I believe in voting, but I won't vote for a woman, no matter who it is and I won't vote Republican either. The super-delegates better get it together. Florida wont have a re-vote and right now, it looks like Michigan won't either. (I'm from Michigan).

David, did you ever consider that maybe Mexico doesn't want Americans moving there? Who will give you a job?

No matter HOW bad things get here, they won't be as bad as they are in Mexico. Do you realize that as a 16 year old girl moving down to Mexico to live with missionaries, the first thing I was told was "if you are raped, don't call the police, they'll just rape you, too?" I was propositioned by policemen, too, and had my brother not been nearby I don't know what would have happened. There are squatter's villages that have as many people in them as the city I live in, and a good amount of the people have nothing better than bedsheets tied to poles to shield them from the weather. Children run around naked and shit in the streets. People beg for work and subside off of less money per week than even a stoned junior high kid makes in one hour at a McDonald's.

The reason the Mexicans come here is it is the ONLY way they can guarantee a better life for their families. Mexico's government is corrupt from the bottom up. (Believe me. Rather than a driver's license, all you need is a wad of cash to bribe the police. As Americans, they would pull us over for "inspections" and just hold out their hand for cash, it was common course.)

I could rant for days. Sorry, you hit a bit of a hot button- but I lived in Mexico for eight months, and I've seen what it's like, and even the "middle class" (equivalent to our poor) were scared most of the time. Police may just walk in to your house and steal things.

No matter HOW bad things get here, there is still LAW. (well, one hopes. Ha.)
I had the same feeling, I thought: "I would vote for this man." There was a lot of buzz about his heritage and how unique he is and "the first Black President", but my feelings had nothing to do with that. I thought that he gave one of the best speeches I'd heard in my adult life, and I wanted someone that intelligent, thoughtful, well versed, etc, to be in the White House. I want to return to Statesmanship, and that's what Obama means to me.
Same here, Carol. it was that speech. I thought: This is a future president.

Carol,

I won't need a job. McCain 08.

She is correct, and I can confirm it with statements made by other folks who have visited or lived there.
